The World Cup 2027 is just a year away, and all teams would have already started strategising, making plans for the mega event. And why not, this is the biggest ICC tournament. Team India, right after the IPL 2026, play their first ODI series against Afghanistan in mid June, and as per a report in Dainik Jagran, there could be a major change loading. The selectors might just be looking at Sanju Samson, instead of Rishabh Pant.
Sanju Samson vs Rishabh Pant for ODI spot
And what might have only contributed to this is, the poor white-ball form Rishabh Pant is undergoing, including the IPL 2026. In 8 matches, he has only 189 runs to his name, at an SR of 126, and an average of 27. While KL Rahul is the first-choice keeper in the ODIs, Pant sometimes came in as the reserve.

The report further stated, that after doing well in the T20Is for India, and now for CSK, the selectors might be interested in giving Sanju Samson a chance. What doesn’t work for Pant is, despite being in the squad for SA and NZ ODIs, he hasn’t played the format since 2024. He sat out the entire SA series, while got injured before the NZ series. In his place, Dhruv Jurel was picked.
No more white-ball formats for Pant?
Talking about Samson, he already has two tons in the IPL this season, increasing his chances. If one was to compare Pant and Samson’s stats in ODIs, the latter comes out tops. The southpaw batter has played 31 matches so far, where he has scored 871 runs at an average of 33. On the other hand, the Kerala man has played 16, with an average of 56.

And why just Samson, there could possibly be other contenders ahead of Pant at the moment, for white-ball formats. Ishan Kishan is having a breakthrough year, and if he performs well, could be in the running too. He has played 27 ODIs for India, where he has even scored a double ton.
